Big skin care companies regularly put NASTY things like potentially harmful chemicals and preservatives in your skin care products. Why, you might ask? To reduce costs, increase profit, and extend shelf-life. Naked Chick Organics thinks this is a ridiculous and potentially dangerous practice. That's why we work hard to bring you fabulous skin care products without all the NASTINESS!
Getting Naked not only makes you feel great, but it's also great for you (and your skin). It's true! We are 100% chemical-free, industrial grease-less, and faux fragrance-free. In other words, our ingredients COME from plants, they are not MANUFACTURED in plants.
8 THINGS NEVER FOUND IN OUR STUFF
1) Parabens (Including Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl, Isopropyl, Methyl, and Benzyl)
Parabens are the most widely used preservatives in personal care products. They have a weak ability to mimic estrogen and have been found in breast cancer tumors! Parabens are absorbed into the skin, have the potential to disrupt our endocrine systems, and have been linked to male reproductive problems. Many manufacturers add parabens to their products to increase shelf life – to a minimum of 3 years. This is possible because parabens kill bacteria that could potentially enter the product. If these chemicals are killing bacterial cells, what are they doing to your skin cells? Bottom line: Research strongly suggests synthetic ingredients may have a significant impact on our bodies.
Numerous studies have shown sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), an inexpensive foaming agent which dissolves oils on the skin, causes rashes, infections, inflammation, & contact dermatitis can be a common reaction. Studies have also shown that these compounds can cause a distinct change in the genetic makeup of cells. They have actually been used in studies to cause bacteria to mutate!
3) Propylene Glycol
Propylene glycol has severe adverse health effects, and has been found to cause contact dermatitis, ototoxicity (ear poisoning resulting from exposure to drugs or chemicals), kidney damage, and liver abnormalities in various clinical human and animal studies. This chemical is used as anti-freeze, airplane de-icer, & brake fluid. When you purchase a drum of propylene glycol from a supplier, that supplier is required to furnish an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). Ironically, the MSDS for propylene glycol says "Avoid skin contact." Yet, this chemical is found in most skin creams on the market. Gross!
Petroleum jelly is a byproduct of the oil industry. It’s leftover residue created during the refinery of crude oil. NASTY! Petroleum jelly forms a seal over the skin, preventing your skin from eliminating bacteria and toxins through the pores, potentially trapping them under the skin. It is also water-repellant, not water-soluble, making it difficult to cleanse from the skin. Petroleum can then build up in the pores and attract dirt and bacteria, potentially causing breakouts and skin irritation. Also, because Petroleum comes from crude oil, it is not a sustainable resource.
5) Synthetic Fragrance
Synthetic fragrance is the most common ingredient found in personal care products. Fragrance can indicate the presence of up to 4,000 separate ingredients. Most or all of these ingredients are synthetic chemicals. The FDA has a long list of symptoms that have been reported following synthetic fragrance use, including headaches, dizziness, rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing, vomiting, and allergic skin irritation. Clinical observations by medical doctors have shown that exposure to fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, irritability, inability to cope, and other behavioral changes. The US Environmental Protection Agency found that 100% of perfumes contain toluene, which can cause liver, kidney, & brain damage as well as damage to a developing fetus. Why would anyone use a synthetic fragrance? Synthetic fragrance oils are cheap - which means big profits for corporations... and potential illness for you.
Phthalates are endocrine disruptors that have been linked to cancer, sperm damage, and reproductive problems. Phthalates are used to preserve color and scents in beauty products and are often added to synthetic fragrances in soaps, lotions, cleansers, and hair care products. Because companies are allowed to list "fragrance" as an ingredient in products, without specifying what that means, many products contain phthalates even though these chemicals aren’t included on their ingredient lists!
7) Artificial Colors/Dyes
Artificial colors and dyes are often made from coal tar. Coal tar is a byproduct of steel and gas industries. YUCK! Studies performed on animals have shown that most artificial colors are carcinogenic! That means they are CANCER CAUSING! Many artificial colors are made of 20 or more chemicals to help them achieve their color.
Between 5% and 10% of all people may suffer from a wheat/gluten sensitivity of some form and researchers believe that 1 in every 133 people (about 3 million people) of the western population is suffering from Celiac Disease. The University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center estimates 97% of those with Celiac Disease remain undiagnosed. While it is true that the gluten molecule cannot penetrate skin, it can still enter your mouth, thus causing an unfavorable reaction. If you suffer from Celiac disease, wheat/gluten sensitivity or wheat allergy, it is important to use gluten-free skin care products, and here’s why: if you have body oil or balm, containing wheat/gluten, on your hands and then eat a piece of fruit or a sandwich, that gluten has been transferred to the apple or bread and is now in your body. (If you use a lip balm with gluten in it, lick your lips or drink a beverage, that balm has now passed through your mouth and wheat/gluten has entered your body.)
* Evidence continues to mount that personal care products are brimming with unsafe ingredients. Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database, a project of Environmental Working Group (EWG), shows that everyday store brands, expensive mail order products and upscale luxury skincare items commonly contain toxic substances.
